Dr. James ridge compression forcep is great for those situations where a tooth was extracted atraumatically without reflecting a flap, but the ridge contour is undercut or has left sharp bony edges. Instead of then reflecting the flap for alveoloplasty or rongeur/bone file adaptation, these compression forceps can be used to compress the ridge and remove most sharp bony edges and undercuts, saving time and reducing post-op discomfort. It's an improved version of the old dentist's trick of finger squeezing the ridge. The ridge compression forceps have been very helpful for situations involving multiple extractions followed by immediate denture delivery, either as definitive restoration or as temporary prostheses for implant treatment.
